Police have identified the body of a woman found floating at an Auckland beach.
Officers were called to Okahu Bay around 10am yesterday when a member of the public spotted the body in the water.
It is understood the person who made the discovery went into the water to pull the body - which was face down - back to shore.
Police say information came to light overnight, revealing her to be a 53-year-old of Indian descent from Mt Roskill.
The woman's next of kin are in the process of being contacted.
Enquiries are continuing into the circumstances of her death but it is not believed to be suspicious and the matter has been referred to the Coroner.
At the scene yesterday morning, joggers and cyclists stopped to see what was happening.
One woman on a bike said: "Oh no, that's just tragic."
Several police officers cordoned off a section of the beach as they guarded the body.
A small dark blanket covered it and not long afterwards a black police van arrived.
Officers were seen lifting the small figure into a body bag and on to a stretcher before placing her inside the vehicle.
