Letters that claim people have won large amounts of money are a scam and should be ignored, police say.
Nelson Bays police said they had recently received a number of enquiries from concerned members of the public regarding letters advising them they have won a large sum of money.
The letters contained a scratch and win type ticket, which when scratched indicates a win of a large sum of money.
It then asks the receiver to call one of several phone numbers or email an address in a foreign country to register and claim their prize, police said.
This was followed up by a caller asking for personal information.
Police urged members of the public not to respond and said anyone who received mail of this type should either destroy it immediately or send it to the Nelson Police station.
