The arrest of one of New Zealand's most prolific criminals comes as little surprise in some quarters.

Glenn Green was only let out of prison two weeks ago.

He's got more than 200 convictions to his name.

The latest arrest is for breaching his release conditions.

Ruth Money of the Sensible Sentencing Trust says it's a story she could've written last month.

"We're just thankful that he hasn't caused serious damage while he's been out. Money adds he's not the only one they're concerned about.

"The public needs to be protected and legislation needs to allow for that and it doesn't right now."

Money says it's a prime example of why public protection orders are needed.

Green's next court appearance is scheduled for the Manukau District Court in August.
