A teenager accused of murdering Ashburton mother Sina Solomona has pleaded not guilty in Youth Court today.

The 16-year-old appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in Ashburton in front of a public gallery which included his parents and siblings and the mother of the murder victim.

Ms Solomona was found dead on December 15 at her Cass Street property and the 16-year-old was arrested and charged a few days later.

He was committed for trial on April 19 in the High Court at Timaru.

He was remanded in custody but defence lawyer Liz Bulger indicated bail would be sought at a later date.

During the appearance the youth was also charged with sexually violating a female under 16.
