Police are searching for a 25-year-old man in connection to the shooting of a young man outside his south Auckland home.

Police warn that Gareth Heron should not be approached and it is believed he has a 0.22 calibre cut-down rifle in his possession.

A 23-year-old victim remains in a critical condition, after being rushed to Middlemore Hospital about 11pm last night.

He was standing at the road outside his East Tamaki home when "he was confronted by an assailant who discharged a firearm at him'', Detective Inspector Jim Gallagher said.

There was concern for the man's survival.

Mr Gallagher said police were now searching for a 1998 dark green Mazda Capella, registration GKM946, and Mr Heron who was connected to the car.

The car was believed to have visited the address around the time of the shooting.

Mr Heron was known to use multiple Auckland addresses and frequent the Howick, Pakuranga and Flatbush suburbs.

"The public is asked not to approach the vehicle or its occupant if seen, but to report any sightings as to his whereabouts to police,'' Mr Gallagher said.

Police would also like to talk to anyone who was in the Eastland Road area at the time of the shooting.

Anyone with information should call Counties Manukau Police on 09 261 1300 or Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
