An intoxicated man put an elderly Sydney woman in a headlock before he assaulted two police officers.

The 18-year-old allegedly smashed the rear window of a home at Asquith, on Sydney's north shore, about 6pm on Monday and climbed inside, police say.

He grabbed the 78-year-old female occupant and demanded her vehicle before putting her in a headlock.

The man then pushed over the woman's 82-year-old husband, injuring his back, before stealing food and clothing from the property.

A short time later, police were called to a home in nearby Wahroonga after receiving reports of an intoxicated male.

Officers found a man wandering in the middle of the road and tried to detain him when a struggle ensued.

Two members of the public assisted the officers until he was restrained in handcuffs.

He remains in Hornsby Hospital for assessment and will be taken into police custody upon his release.

The two police officers and elderly couple suffered minor injuries.
