A mother has admitted killing her baby boy by falling asleep with and accidentally suffocating him after spending a day drinking alcohol.

Ngaire Kura Tukiwaho, 30, appeared in the High Court at Rotorua this afternoon and pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of her 2-month-old baby Tahi Elvis Edwards.

According to the summary of facts Tukiwaho had been drinking before she fell asleep with her baby in the back seat of a car on January 5, 2011.

When Tukiwaho woke up the baby was blue and not breathing. It was found that Tahi died as a result of probable accidental suffocation associated with an unsafe sleeping environment.

Justice Geoffrey has remanded Tukiwaho in custody for sentencing on May 30.
