A furore has blown up around an ad offering to pay for "beer wenches" to serve male spectators at the historic Australia-New Zealand day-night test in Adelaide.
The controversial advertisement seeks young women who are "easy on the eye" and keen to line up for beer all day for a group of drunk blokes.
The ad on the popular Gumtree website was posted by a man named Nick on Monday but has since been deleted as people reacted to the "sexist and demeaning" content.
It offered attractive women the chance to "watch cricket with 20 handsome guys" for A$20 an hour at the first day-night test, starting in Adelaide on Friday.
The ad was slammed by Adelaide Oval officials, with a stadium management authority spokesman telling local newspaper The Advertiser: "The Adelaide Oval absolutely does not condone this kind of activity and there are rules on the responsible consumption of alcohol that are very clear to everyone throughout the venue and on our website.
"We think the boys should do the right thing and get their own drinks."
Australia's Equal Opportunity commissioner Anne Gale said the ad could be in breach of the Equal Opportunity Act as it "specifies age and gender, which employers are not allowed to do".
The drama did not deter another Gumtree user, Daniel, from keeping his ad for "Beer Wenches" on site for a day at the Australia vs West Indies test next month, on Saturday, December 12.
But that particular ad, for a male buck's party, was not as demeaning as the Adelaide promotion, asking only that the potential employee had the "ability to carry beer and share in the laughter of [the] day (at our mate's expense of course)."
"We have thrown up the idea of 'beer wenches' to assist with our continued hydration throughout the day," Daniel's ad reads.
"Four hours of your time would include entry ticket and negotiated rate for day."
According to The Advertiser, the act of hiring bar maids at the cricket had been going on for over a decade. In another publicised case in 2013, a group of 20 men offered two women the chance to earn A$200 to work as "beer wenches" at the Waca in Perth, also providing the costume.
The group, which also advertised for the position on Gumtree, said they were looking for two "easy-going women aged 18-35".
"This is a dress-up party theme by the Waca so you will be required to dress up also. We will supply costume as per photo," the ad read, accompanied by a racy photo.
The advertiser at the time, Trent, said: "We were just at work and thinking it'd be good not having to line up for beers.
"We wanted just anyone, just fun sheilas having a laugh and happy to get us beer all day.
"I suppose looks come into play. They sent a photo and all the boys sat around and said, 'What do you reckon?'"
