Messages of support are flooding in for Jesse Ryder as the Kiwi cricketer fights for his life in Christchurch Hospital.
A 20-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the brutal beating of Ryder, who suffered a punctured lung, fractured skull and internal injuries in the alleged attack in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The cricket star remains in an induced coma in Christchurch Hospital, with his family and manager by his side, after the attack early yesterday morning.
Supportive messages have come from around the world.
"Just got of the plane and heard the news about Jesse Ryder ! What on earth happened? Wishing him a full recovery!" wrote former England cricket all rounder Ian Botham on Twitter.
Former Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath also took to Twitter to express his support.
"Our thoughts are with NZ cricketer Jesse Ryder & his family. Jesse was assaulted & is in intensive care. We wish him a speedy & full recovery."
West Indian cricketer Chris Gayle wrote: "Will Have Jesse in my prayer."
Former England player Michael Vaughan wrote: "Devastating news regarding Jesse Ryder... Just hope he can pull through... Thoughts are with him and his family..."
Fans also took to Ryder's Facebook page, which was flooded by fan support.
"My son said to me this morning, 'I can't believe it, I was just watching him play last weekend at the Basin'. Good luck and get well soon and get back on the pitch, you have many kids who look up to you, see you soon," wrote Tracey Badcock.
Local sports stars also offered their support.
