HYDERABAD, India - Australia have held on for a thrilling three-run victory over India in the fifth one-day international this morning, despite a dashing 175 from Sachin Tendulkar.

India seemed to be heading toward the second-highest run-chase in the history of one-day internationals but Tendulkar's dismissal, off his 141st delivery, prompted a collapse that ultimately left it marginally short of victory. India now trails the seven-match series 3-2.

Earlier, an outstanding 145-run opening partnership between Shaun Marsh (112) and Shane Watson (93) boosted Australia to an imposing total of 350-4 in 50 overs.

Tendulkar's 45th one-day century led India's chase, but Watson returned to snare 3-47 and rookie pacer Clint McKay claimed 3-59. The hosts were all out for 347 with two balls to spare.

The 36-year-old Tendulkar became the first player to score 17,000 runs in one-day internationals when he reached seven. Hitting four sixes and nine boundaries, he and Suresh Raina put on a brisk 137-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

After Tendulkar's departure, the Australian players kept their nerves and claimed the last three wickets for 15 runs. Praveen Kumar's run out in the final over sparked onfield celebrations for the injury-hit Australian team, which has seen five players return home due to injury midway from this tour.

Batting first after skipper Ricky Ponting won the toss, Australia got off to a flying start with Watson dominating the opening stand. The opener struck three sixes and nine boundaries on a pitch that offered no assistance to the bowlers.

Watson appeared set for his fifth century in one-day internationals when he miscued a delivery from offspinner Harbhajan Singh (1-44) which was caught by Ravindra Jadeja at deep-midwicket.

Marsh then added 91 runs for the second wicket with captain Ponting, who contributed 45 before seam bowler Kumar beat him with a slower delivery to dislodge the stumps.

Marsh hit two sixes and eight boundaries as he surpassed his previous best of 81. He fell to a fine catch by Gautam Gambhir off pace bowler Ashish Nehra (1-79).

Cameron White continued to punish the Indian attack, smashing five sixes and two fours in his 33-ball 57. He was out on the final delivery of the innings, snapped by Tendulkar off Kumar who returned figures of 2-68.

Michael Hussey remained unbeaten after a 22-ball 31 to continue his outstanding form on this tour.
