Great news for Canterbury whitebaiters - the Avon and Heathcote rivers have been cleared for fishing.

After the February 22 earthquake led to contamination, whitebaiters were told to stay away.

ECan says the Avon and Heathcote water quality is back to normal so should not be an issue for the whitebaiting season that began on August 15.

However, whitebaiters are warned they need to be wary after any 'big rain events'.
