An elderly woman was seriously injured in a three-car crash which closed northbound traffic on State Highway 2 between Wellington and Lower Hutt.

A police central communications spokesman said a southbound car collided with northbound traffic at Horokiwi about 11.40am today.

An elderly woman was trapped in one of the vehicles and had to be cut out.

She was taken to Hutt Hospital with serious injuries.

Two people suffered moderate injuries and two others suffered minor injuries.

The northbound lane was expected to remain closed until shortly after 1pm.

The roads in Wellington are slippery from showers and drizzle overnight and this morning, after weeks without significant rain.
