Dusty Trails is the duo of Vivian Trimble (Luscious Jackson) and Josephine Wiggs (the Breeders). But their former American alt-rock attachments give little hint at what they've come up with here - a rather gorgeously time-warped faux soundtrack that's a bit Brazilian, a smidgen Gallic and, care of a guest vocal appearance on Order Coffee by Emmylou Harris (who did the same on the final Jackson album), a little cosmically country.
Trimble and Wiggs manage a small attic-full of keyboards, guitars, basses and percussion instruments and have the help of various New York cohorts as well as a sampling habit that takes in quite a few Quincy Jones soundtracks.
Along the way the songs swoon bilingually (the airy pop of Est-ce Que Tu), torch'n'twang tastefully (Fool for a Country Tune), and just briefly recall the pop style of Trimble's old band (Roll the Dice).
A bogus soundtrack or a tribute to soundtracks of a bygone era it may be, but you can't help but think that actually putting a movie to this oddly exquisite collection would ruin it.
