They could probably make a small fortune selling their designs on Ponsonby Rd.
But Penrose High School design students Lani Harcourt-Smith and Daniel Tidey are happy keeping their clientele local for the time being.
They are among about 50 students at the school who have completed three projects and a diary of design work and related studies for School Certificate design.
Seventeen-year-old Daniel constructed his "free-flowing" metal sculpture for the garden from a pile of old metal pipes found under the school design technology room.
He admits he enjoyed making the sculpture but does not see himself as a "sculpture kind of person."
"I can't see myself as standing there and looking at art and rating it. I wouldn't enjoy that.
"I don't make it because I care what anyone else thinks. To me it's just the fun of making it and seeing it develop."
Sculpture is one of three designs students must complete, along with a piece of outdoor furniture for urban living and a product that can be sold through a retail outlet.
Sixteen-year-old Lani has already "sold" her wood and metal lounger to her father - for a discounted rate - but is keen on marketing the design.
"You can lounge on it, you can sit five people on it. It's for all ages," she said.
"You see everything everywhere is straight and flat - nothing to suit the ergonomics of the human body. That's where the curve comes from."
Design technology teacher Gabrielle Ashton said she was "blown away" by the maturity and sophistication of the work produced by the class.
Many students had worked after school and at the weekend to complete their projects, which included jewellery, clothing and electronic toys.
Another student, Hayley Message, had produced a wooden planter from recycled floor boards and had already received 25 orders.
Ms Ashton, who planned to buy Daniel's sculpture, said the exhibition had acted as a catalyst for students to produce high-quality work.
"They all have part-time jobs and the thought of making something and being able to sell it kept some of them going."
