NEW YORK (AP) " U.S. stocks inched higher Tuesday in another cautious day of trading as investors kept an eye on central banks in the U.S. and Japan. Health care and household goods companies led the way while energy companies slipped.
The Dow Jones industrial average picked up 9.79 points, or 0.1 percent, to 18,129.96.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 0.64 points to 2,139.76.
The Nasdaq composite edged up 6.33 points, or 0.1 percent, to 5,241.35.
For the week:
The Dow is up 6.16 points.
The S&P 500 is up 0.60 points.
The Nasdaq is down 3.21 points, or 0.1 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 704.93 points, or 4 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 95.82 points, or 4.7 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 233.94 points, or 4.7 percent.
