Markets Right Now: US stocks edge mostly lower

Stocks are closing mostly lower in light trading, led by declines in energy stocks as the price of crude oil sinks.

Halliburton and Transocean each lost 4 percent Monday.

The Nasdaq composite notched a small gain as biotech companies rose following the acquisition of pharmaceutical company Medivation, but other major indexes edged lower.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 23 points, or 0.1 percent, to 18,529. The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 1 point, less than 0.1 percent, to 2,182. The Nasdaq composite rose 6 points, or 0.1 percent, to 5,244.

Trading volume was very light, as it has been all month.

The price of crude oil fell 3 percent to $47 a barrel.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.54 percent.

Mining and materials stocks also fell early Monday as the prices of copper and other metals decline.

Murphy Oil fell almost 4 percent and Freeport-McMoRan lost 3 percent.

Benchmark U.S. crude oil fell 3 percent to $47 a barrel.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 41 points, or 0.2 percent, to 18,512. The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 4 points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,179. The Nasdaq composite slipped 7 points, or 0.1 percent, to 5,231.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.54 percent.

Stocks are opening slightly lower on Wall Street, led by declines in energy stocks as the price of crude oil turned lower.

Mining and materials stocks also fell early Monday as the prices of copper and other metals decline.

Murphy Oil fell almost 4 percent and Freeport-McMoRan lost 3 percent.

Utilities and health care stocks were the only sectors to rise.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 74 points, or 0.4 percent, to 18,478. The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 6 points, or 0.3 percent, to 2,176. The Nasdaq composite slipped 12 points, or 0.3 percent, to 5,224.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.55 percent.
