NEW YORK (AP) " U.S. stocks took small losses Friday to end a quiet week of trading. Energy companies fell as a rally in oil prices faded and investors continue to sell the safe assets they favored earlier this year. Technology and materials companies made small gains.
The Dow Jones industrial average shed 45.13 points, or 0.2 percent, to 18,552.57.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 3.15 points, or 0.1 percent, to 2,183.87.
The Nasdaq composite lost 1.77 points, or less than 0.1 percent, to 5,238.38.
For the week:
The Dow fell 23.90 points, or 0.1 percent.
The S&P 500 lost 0.18 points, or less than 0.1 percent.
The Nasdaq rose 5.48 points, or 0.1 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 1,127.54 points, or 6.5 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 139.93 points, or 6.8 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 230.97 points, or 4.6 percent.
