Romania: 16,000 packs of cigarettes found hidden in timber

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) " Romanian border police have found some 16,000 packets of contraband cigarettes hidden in planks of timber in a truck that entered Romania from Ukraine.

Police said they discovered the cigarettes early Wednesday after they inspected the contents of the truck, which was crossing the border in northwest Romania.

Police photos showed cigarettes wrapped up in plastic concealed in hollowed-out planks of timber. A statement said they are worth 145,000 lei ($36,500).

The truck was driven by a Romanian man who is resident in northwest Romania. He is being questioned on suspicion of smuggling and the truck was seized.

This month, Novel Research marketing company said about 25 percent of cigarettes in western Romania were contraband.
