How is life at the top?
Great! I have been in the job eight months now, it's been full of challenges, and we are starting to see real traction. Sales are up, and people seem to understand and relate to our mission to bring first-world internet to New Zealand.
How are you coping with increased public profile?
Ha! I haven't been recognised in the supermarket just yet. But I am loving the fact Orcon is becoming better known.
What's your top tip for being a successful leader?
Be clear on what it is the organisation is striving to achieve, tell stories rather than instructions, and be a great listener.
What's the biggest challenge you've faced in getting to the top?
Having the courage to let go of what feels safe and try uncharted territories.
Who has inspired you in your career?
A long time ago I was working in the stock and station industry.
The leader of our business unit convinced me to leave paid employment and study full time at university. I was 23 at the time and his insight and inspiration had the single largest impact on my career.
Who is your biggest supporter?
I have a fantastic team around me and all of us being each other's biggest supporters means we can achieve great things.
What do you do to relax and unwind?
Good friends, good food and good wine all help. Plus my personal trainer has a great knack of exhausting me into relaxation.
When you do take time out do you turn the phone off?
Time out is now through much of January. The phone tends to stay on all year round unless our holiday takes us into dodgy coverage. And that is exactly where I'm heading this year.
