The government's partial sale of Mighty River Power has prompted thousands of New Zealanders to consider investing in the stock exchange for the first time.

As well-known companies like the Mad Butcher and Z Energy also look set to go public, the NZX is now its healthiest state for years.

But how do I get started in investing, how much money do I need, what does it mean to have a 'diversified portfolio'? What are the risks?
