Last of the gold next year

Next season may be the last time consumers will enjoy Zespri Gold kiwifruit. The vines that produce the high-earning golden-fleshed fruit are so vulnerable to the bacterial disease Psa-V they are unlikely to be grown commercially after next year.

However, John Burke, general manager of Kiwifruit Vine Health, says two new gold kiwifruit are showing more tolerance to the disease and it is hoped they will fill the void left by the variety referred to as Hort16A.
