KEY POINTS:
Two property managers who stole more than $20,000 in rent and bond have been banned from the real estate industry.
The Real Estate Institute took cases against Abdul Imitiaz Aziz of Auckland and Penelope Jane Jones of Tauranga, asking that the Real Estate Agents' Licensing Board cancel their salespersons' certificates.
Aziz worked for The Rent Shop, part of The Professionals which had an office at Hunter's Corner in Papatoetoe, but has since shifted to Botany Junction. Jones worked at First National's Mt Maunganui office.
The institute said Aziz did not appear at the hearing.
"Reinz alleged that Mr Aziz misappropriated funds in excess of $13,000 that included bond money not lodged, letting fees and rental money received personally by Mr Aziz.
Mr Aziz admitted the misappropriations and undertook to repay in full the outstanding amounts," Reinz said.
The board decided that overall, the evidence established that $13,000 was stolen on a systematic basis, and that the evidence justified the application for cancellation.
The institute said Jones did not wish to appear at the hearing but told the board she misappropriated funds in the course of her role as a property manager.
"In particular, Ms Jones purported to bank receipted payments to the value of $7293, but did not; that Ms Jones altered a document, namely a deposit slip; Ms Jones was unable to account for the whereabouts of a money order to the value of $3950 received by her," Reinz said.
