Police helped a family member administer CPR to a 12-year-old boy found with a life-threatening chest wound at a Bay of Plenty property this afternoon.
Police were called to the address in Pongakawa, near Te Puke, about 4pm where they found the injured boy.
They helped family members give CPR until ambulance staff arrived and took over, police said this evening.
An ambulance spokeswoman said the boy was flown to hospital in a life-threatening condition.
The boy was later transferred from Tauranga Hospial to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition.
Police declined to give further comment on the injury or what might have caused it.
"At this stage the incident doesn't appear to be suspicious but an investigation is underway and family members are co-operative and assisting police," police said.
