The first day of winter failed to bring traditional winter woes to the Bay of Plenty.
Blue skies and a high of 17C were felt in Tauranga today and things aren't expected to get too chilly until the weekend when low temperatures of 5C and 6C are expected.
On the 21st and 23rd of May Tauranga had its coldest days with temperatures reaching 2C.
Metservice meteorologist Angus Hines said the first day of winter had been "rather mild and uneventful", which was better than the alternative for most people.
"There's going to be a change towards the weekend. There's a cold front moving across the country but Tauranga won't bear the brunt of that so much as other places.
"It's expected to be pretty cold Sunday and Monday as we move into the long weekend. There's reasonable temperatures of 15C and 13C during the day but the overnight minimums will be a bit more noticeable.
"People who have to get up early and going to work, that's when you will feel it."
