A Tauranga man led police on a high-speed pursuit that reached speeds of 170km/h because he wanted "to have some fun".
Ethan Cowley, 20, plead guilty to three charges in Tauranga District Court yesterday.
The charges were driving while his licence was suspended, failing to stop for police and theft.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Mark Graham told the court the pursuit began after Cowley, a disqualified driver, was spotted driving on Otumoetai Rd on December 15.
The prolonged pursuit through Bureta, Tauranga CBD, including Chapel St, the Harbour Bridge on-ramp intersection, Takitimu Drive and the Toll Rd, only came to an end at The Lakes after Cowley's car was blocked by a metal roadside barrier.
Along the way, two patrol cars were in pursuit as Cowley failed to slow down for give way signs, overtook vehicles at more than 110 km/h, and drove over double yellow lines.
At the intersection of Harbour Bridge on-ramp he used the cycle lane to squeezed his way through motorists who were stopped at a red traffic light.
At one stage a motorist had to rapidly reverse their vehicle to avoid a collision.
Once he reached the Toll Rd, Cowley overtook three motorists at more than 170 km/h, and at one stage he nearly lost control and his vehicle fishtailed.
Speeding under the toll gate he headed towards The Lakes, but halfway towards Lake Boulevard, he slowed right down, until a patrol car moved alongside him.
Cowley only stopped when his car was blocked in and two patrol cars moved in prevent him driving off.
He denied his suspended licence was the reason behind his failure to stop and told the arresting officer - " I guess I just wanted to have some fun."
Lawyer William McNicol told Judge Christina Cook that his client suffered from an anxiety disorder and depression and had not been taking his medication.
"Ethan is absolutely aghast at his behaviour and he wants to apologise to the court, to the police officers, and the other motorists he potentially put at risk," he said.
Judge Cook remained Cowley on bail for sentencing on April 5.
"Mr Cowley this was an appalling piece of driving. But I've heard some of your background and hopefully, there'll be some positive matters to come out of the pre-sentence report."
The theft charge related to Cowley stealing $700 from his mother and step-father's home while they were away, after breaking in, the court heard.
