The smell of bacon wafted over Mount Main Beach yesterday as crowds gathered for a free feed and lawn games next to the Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service.
The barbecue, put on by The Hits, aimed to raise money for the new building the surf club hopes to have ready for the 2017/2018 season.
Farmer Jones donated food for the barbecue and people on the beach had the option of sausages or bacon and eggs and were asked for a donation for the club.
Raquel Leopold of The Hits said staff had been flat out at the barbecue cooking food for the masses.
Jamie Fleming, 11, was playing with a ring toss while waiting for his bacon and eggs.
The Wellington boy was staying in Matua with his grandparents for most of January and was making the most of having the beach nearby.
Yesterday, he and his mother walked up Mauao and when they came down, saw the barbecue and decided to line up.
"It's great here, we've been having lots of fun," Jamie said.
He was looking forward to getting out on his boogie board as much as he could during summer.
