Tsunami sirens are back on the table after Tauranga City Council unanimously voted to re-investigate other warning alert systems including air raid-type sirens.
Councillor Steve Morris proposed the motion supported by Cr Leanne Brown and Bill Grainger.
Cr Larry Baldock then succeeded in asking the council to encourage the government to review the nationwide standard for siren alerting, along with tax payer funding for the installation testing and operation of sirens.
The council wants the government to take utmost urgency with this.
Cr Baldock motion was carried unanimously.
Tsunami alert sirens were put on the agenda after mounting pressure from coastal residents concerned they slept through the recent earthquake.
An unofficial Bay of Plenty Times street survey found 57 out of 60 Mount Maunganui and Papamoa residents polled said there should be tsunami sirens along the coastal strip.
