Earlier: State Highway 35 has been closed between Maraenui and Omaio following a substantial slip that has blocked the road.

The slip resulted in large boulders falling onto the highway on the western side of the Motu Bridge and heavy machinery will be required to clear them, police said in a media release.

Contractors were on their way, but it may be some time until the road is cleared and made safe.

The road will be closed until further notice.

Anyone planning to use this route is encouraged to consider delaying their travel plans.
