A gas leak has forced the closure of a busy residential road in Mount Maunganui this afternoon.

However, the section of Oceanbeach Rd between Surf Rd and Concord Ave has just been reopened.

Firefighters received reports of the gas leak at 3.08pm and closed the street off as they worked to isolate the leak.

Fire Service nothern communications shift manager Megan Ruru said the leak had now been fixed and the road was now open again to traffic.
