A severe weather watch has been put in place for the Bay of Plenty.

Over the last 12 hours 44mm of rain had fallen on the Kaimai Range while 18mm had fallen in Tauranga.

The Metservice said more periods of heavy rain were likely today and tomorrow morning, with the heaviest falls expected to be west of Te Puke and the coast.

In the last 24 hours about 15mm of rain would have fallen in the Te Puke region.

People were advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts in case the severe weather watch needed to be upgraded to a warning.
