Wild weather in the Western Bay this morning has cut power in Pongakawa and knocked over a lamp post in Bellevue.

Fire northern communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said a lamp post had been knocked over by wind in Bellevue shortly after 6am this morning.

The post had been sparking on the road.

Mr Phillips said the road was blocked, but it was now clear.

Trees are down in Otamarakau and have caused a power outage throughout the Pongakawa area.

Mr Phillips said trees and power lines were down on Otamarakau Valley Rd, about 3km from State Highway 2.

Powerco's unexpected power cuts register showed 145 properties were without power. It was expected to be restored after midday.

Twenty-three millimetres of rain has fallen in Tauranga this morning, with a further 6mm expected to fall throughout the day, according to Metservice.
