Serious crash on Tauranga Eastern Link

6:54pm: One person has been taken to hospital with back injuries after a four car crash on State Highway 2.

Acting Sergeant Andy Anderson said the four cars had collided just before 6pm on the west-bound lanes of the new Tauranga Eastern Link near Paengaroa.

One person was taken to hospital with back injuries but there were no one else was seriously hurt.

Mr Anderson said one of the cars appeared to have hydroplaned and crashed into a median barrier before other cars collided with it.

One west-bound lane was open but the other lanes would remain closed for about an hour while the wreckage was cleared, he said.

EARLIER: Multiple people have been injured in a crash which has blocked State Highway 2.

A Fire Service Northern Communications Service spokesman said emergency services were at the crash on the west-bound lanes of the new Tauranga Eastern Link toll road near the Paengaroa end.

He said three or four vehicles were involved and there were a number of people injured, although he did not know how badly.

Emergency services had just managed to clear and open one of the lanes.
