Police are appealing for help after a man was shot in residential Tauranga overnight.

The 22-year-old man arrived at Tauranga Hospital about 6.30pm with a gunshot wound.

Police stated the wound appeared to have come from a .22 calibre rifle.

The man's injuries were not considered life-threatening, police said in a statement.

Other media reports that the incident occurred in Henderson Crescent at this stage appear to be incorrect, the statement said.

Inquiries into the circumstances of the incident were continuing. Police were seeking witnesses or any further information relating to the shooting and urged anyone with information to contact Tauranga police station on 07 577 4300.

Alternatively information can be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

No further information is available at this time.
