A 57-year-old man lost in the Kaimai Range was winched to safety this morning.

The Tauranga man became lost while walking in the bush yesterday afternoon.

The Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to the ranges southwest of Tauranga at 10am this morning to help get the man to safety.

Pilot and base manager Liam Brettkelly said the man was located by the police helicopter using forward looking infrared technology.

The rescue helicopter was called in with the Port of Tauranga rescue winch to retrieve the man. Mr Brettkelly said the man was cold and wet but uninjured.
