Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, who recently performed in Tauranga, is starring in an ANZAC documentary called Sacrifice On The Somme on Maori Television.

She traveled to the Somme with her opera singing protégé Kawiti Waetford to recognise the sacrifice made by the Pioneer Māori Battalion.

"I believe that one of the ways we can honour that sacrifice, is to learn about it," she said.

Mr Kawiti visits the grave of his great, great grandfather, who served with the Pioneer (Māori) Battalion and died in Northern France.

Watch Sacrifice On The Somme at 8.00am and 6.30pm on ANZAC day, Monday, April 25, on Maori Television.
