Four charges of using a firearm against a law enforcement officer will be laid today following this morning's arrest in the Bay of Plenty shooting incident.

A statement from New Zealand police said the decision was made to lay this charge after due consideration, stating it was the most appropriate charge for the incident.

A 27-year-old Bay of Plenty man is now due to appear in Whakatane District Court at 2.15pm today.

Police said in the statement the possibility of further charges being laid could not be ruled out.
