RSA members gathered around the district for Armistice Day commemorations, yesterday.
Armistice Day is commemorated every year on November 11 to mark the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front after an armistice was signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at 11am on November 11, 1918.
Tauranga RSA president Heather Waldron and an ex-president Dick Frew were among the 30 people who gathered for the 11am commemorative service at the club's cenotaph.
Mrs Waldron, who laid a wreath and read the ode to the fallen, said while she was unsure whether any of her forebears fought in the Great War, relatives had served in WWII.
"It is very important that we do not forget the fallen men who went to war and fought for the freedoms we enjoy today, and most RSAs up and down the country will be commemorating Armistice Day with small services."
Mrs Waldron said while Anzac Day service saw huge turnouts, it was just as important that Armistice Day continued to be commemorated to show respect for the fallen soldiers.
David Watts performed the last post at the service, Reverend John Heberton officiated, and retired Colonel Brian Monks was guest speaker. At Te Puke RSA about 40 members gathered to commemorate the day, while there was no service at Mount Maunganui RSA members held a minute silence.
About 60 people attended the Katikati commemoration which was held last Sunday.
