Mount Maunganui Golf Club finals day produced some tight finishes.
In the juniors, Sam Kendall and Josh Wilson were all square at the 18th before Kendall won the 19th.
The tight tussle was replicated in the women's handicap where Merle Halligan finally won one up over Robyn Knight on the 18th.
In the men vets, Trevor Campbell took the match over early from Ian Pollard to win at the 13th hole.
In Division 2, Maury Lenihan took early control to win 4/3 over Dennis Edwards.
The Handicap match between Roman Tomson and Paul Kim saw Kim cruise to an early win 4/3.
In the Bronze 11, Pam Adlam and Chris Buckley, were a closely matched pair with Adlam going on to win at the 13th hole 6/5.
The Bronze 1 final of Rae Holmes and Sandy Long proved to be a humdinger with Holmes down 2 after six holes before recovering to lead 1 up at the 18th. Holmes then moved to 2 up after 24 holes, then back to all square with six holes to play before sinking a difficult putt to win.
In the Silver, Gillian Lees against Kate Davidson was a real contest from the start. All square after six holes, Lees went to 1 up at the 18th. Davidson then applied some of her own pressure to be 1 up after 24 holes then to 3 up after 30 holes, a lead she held to win and retain the Silver Matchplay title.
Results
Men: Junior: John Sheridan v David Pinders. Leading 5 up after six holes, Sheridan extended to 6 up then 8 up after 18 holes and closed out the match 10/8.
Intermediate: Keen competitors Paul Fahy and Jon Jenner held spectators interest throughout. Fahy took an early lead 1 up after six holes, a margin he held through 12, 18 and 24 holes. The final 6 holes saw him go to 2 up and keep the lead to win 2/1.
Senior championship: Brent Curnow, in his second attempt to win the Senior Matchplay Championship, was matched against Derek Beard. Curnow set the course alight with some great golf to take a lead 5 up after six holes, then extended his lead to 8 up after 12 holes through to the 18th holes, winning 10/9.
