The annual Cancer Society Daffodil Day appeal is a cause dear to many locals' hearts, including that of Bay man Andy Cameron.
The Rotary Club of Tauranga Sunrise member from Tauriko was collecting funds in Red Square yesterday with 9-year-old Newfoundland Maggie.
Mr Cameron, 58, said he had been a Daffodil Day collector for four to five years.
"I'm doing this because it's a very good cause and because the charity does not receive enough money for all the services it provides to cancer sufferers and their families," he said.
Mr Cameron said cancer touched so many families up and down this country, including his own.
"My father, David Cameron, died from cancer 20 years ago. He was only 58. I also have a number of friends who have died from cancer or are survivors. It takes a huge toll on families. It doesn't take much to do a little bit to help raise funds for this very important cause," he said.
Across town a team of local ANZ bankers and some of their business customers trekked around the Mauao base track, running or walking 286 laps or 1000km to help raise $50,000.
Ryn Going and Kura Scott, who are members of Tauranga ANZ Bank's retail business leadership team, said close family members and friends had been touched by cancer. "It makes this cause even more relevant to us. Most people know someone who is battling cancer or died from cancer, and this event is about helping to raise funds and awareness," Ms Going said.
This year marks the 25th year ANZ Bank has been the principal sponsor of the cause that has pledged to raise $1million by holding a series of events.
