Hail, showers and gusty winds briefly swept through Tauranga this afternoon but the city is still yet to see more wet weather today, say MetService.
Reports of hail swept through Mount, Papamoa and Te Puke areas during a cold but brief snap this afternoon.
Gusty westerly winds and the odd shower are expected throughout the day ahead of a front approaching the region tonight.
Meteorologist Rob Kerr said 70km winds were measured at Tauranga Airport this afternoon which brought the brief snap of hail and rain this afternoon.
"A good strong gust at the bottom and all that air has to go somewhere so it's pushed up and that's what builds those hail stones," Mr Kerr said.
Showers are expected to ease on Saturday following the front that is expected overnight and remaining showers look to clear late on Sunday.
