Travelling around Tauranga and parts of the Bay of Plenty will be easier thanks to new high-tech Bluetooth "blip trackers" that help share real time traffic information with people.
A network of units, which use Bluetooth technology, have been placed at points around Tauranga and the Western Bay of Plenty.
The devices record actual travel times for vehicles between the location of the trackers, for example from the Tauranga CBD to Mount Maunganui, Tauriko, Pyes Pa, Papamoa and Te Puke.
The information will be uploaded onto a dedicated website which will tell people exactly how long drivers are currently taking to travel to destination around the region at any time of the day or night.
The web site updates every few minutes.
New Zealand Transport Agency Bay of Plenty journey manager Nigel D'Ath said the initiative would ensure people could plan ahead to work out the best time to leave and what time they would arrive at their destination.
"Knowing how long a journey might take is important for people and businesses."
