Katikati was unusually silent this morning when a crowd of over 2000 gathered at Memorial Square to mark the 100-year commemoration of Anzac Day - April 25, 1915 - a day when thousands of young men, far from their homes stormed the beaches on the Gallipoli Peninsula.
SH2 was closed for the Dawn Service as people of all ages flocked to Memorial Square, where red filters had been placed on the lights at the hall to give it a special glow for Anzac Day.
Katikati RSA President Peter MacKay said he had never seen a crowd like it at a Dawn Service in Katikati before.
