12:44pm: A hitchhiker hit by a car in Te Puke has been taken to hospital in a serious condition.
Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said the 29-year-old Asian woman had been standing on the grass verge when she was struck by the car.
The man driving the car had also been taken to hospital in a serious condition.
Police Northern Communications Centre Inspector Cornell Kluessien said it appeared the driver had suffered a medical episode causing them to hit a pedestrian.
Traffic heading through Te Puke towards toward Tauranga is being diverted down Station Rd.

12.26pm: The driver of a car which hit a pedestrian in Te Puke appears to have had a medical episode, police say.
Police Northern Communications Centre Inspector Cornell Kluessien said it appeared the driver had suffered a medical episode causing them to hit a pedestrian.
Traffic heading through Te Puke towards toward Tauranga is being diverted down Station Rd, he said.
The condition of both the pedestrian and the driver are unknown at this stage.
EARLIER: A person has been hit by a car in Te Puke.
Police Northern Communications Centre Inspector Kerry Watson said initial reports were a person had been hit by a car on Jellicoe St near the intersection of Oroua St.
Police had just arrived at the scene, he said.
