Metservice predicts Tuaranga to reach a high of 17C today but people should get the winter duvets ready for an overnight low of 6C.
A deep upper-level trough of low pressure moved over the South Island of New Zealand yesterday, while an associated surface low lay to the southeast.
The trough dragged up cold air all the way from Antarctica in the country's first significant cold outbreak of the year that would continue to bring snow to parts of the South Island and high elevations of the North Island yesterday and today, a Metservice blog said.
A few more snow showers are likely above 700 metres on parts of the Desert Rd today until early afternoon, especially about southern parts of the road, with another 1 to 2cm possibly
accumulating before this time.
