The removal of a sunken yacht containing 400 litres of diesel at Pilot Bay is expected to take place from this weekend.
The yacht sank in wild weather which hit the Bay on October 5. Now, only its mast is visible above water.
Tauranga Harbour Master Peter Buell said the vessel posed a small danger to navigation over and above the marker and moorings in the immediate area. A light has been placed on the mast for additional safety at night.
However, the mooring was there as well "so the area should be very well known to boaties", Mr Buell said.
"The boat is in a mooring area with many other vessels in the vicinity, and is governed by the 5 knot rule so speed should never be a factor.
"The mast is clearly visible and it is being checked daily."
Mr Buell said the the owner had already started work on the yacht's recovery.
"In this case a reputable company has been engaged to conduct the removal. The Harbourmaster, Compliance and Biosecurity all have various enforcement powers as required to ensure the work is done properly," Mr Buell said.
Bay of Plenty Regional Council said the sunken boat was believed to be the 15-tonne ferro cement Nikita.
It stated earlier this month that the boat held 400 litres of diesel but none appeared to have escaped into the harbour.
