Mount Maunganui retirees and long-term National Party members Pamela, 73, and Max Lewis, 78, have swapped candidates but not alliances. The volunteers had helped Tauranga's Simon Bridges with his campaigns in the past but when the electorate boundaries changed at Easter the sprightly couple hit a dilemma.
Mrs Lewis jokingly said they "were dragged kicking and screaming" into the Bay of Plenty electorate but it made sense to offer their help to Todd Muller as he would receive their votes.
The campaign had been a blast as the duo manned phones, worked in the campaign office and did 54 half hourly street corner meetings with Mr Muller.
However, she said the best fun was being "human hoardings" and holding up placards at high-profile roundabouts in the evening to encourage voters.
"Just because you are old doesn't mean you can't have fun. We have been out there in the rain but the great thing was Todd has been with us waving and smiling and most of the people going by would give us toots, smiles and the thumbs up."
Mr Lewis said he would like to see more people get involved with politics because you can change things by joining a party.
