The Tauranga man who doused himself in petrol before setting himself alight has been flown to Middlemore Hospital.
The 55-year-old suffered ''extremely critical'' injuries after the incident outside the Z petrol station on Cameron Rd and 11th Ave about 4pm on Saturday and was rushed to Tauranga Hospital.
The man was flown to Middlemore Hospital later that night.
He remains in a critical but stable condition in the hospital's intensive care unit, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Police said the male was badly burnt male with self-inflicted injuries described as ''extremely critical''.
Tauranga police are investigating the full circumstances of the incident.
A reporter at the scene said charred clothes were seen on the ground and police were still at the scene.
