Tauranga's homeless men are getting off the streets and getting help putting their life back on track thanks to the new nightshelter.
The Tauranga Moana Nightshelter Trust opened the facility last week and manager Annamarie Angus said the uptake was growing daily.
Five years of planning had gone into establishing the nightshelter and finding the right site in the former youth hostel off Elizabeth St.
Ms Angus said that over the weekend the shelter housed 10 homeless men - half its capacity.
"We had three or four men who had booked in on the first night and they are still here a week later," she said.
"They are really seeing the value in the shelter and getting themselves sorted and progressing."
Ms Angus said men who stayed at the shelter were being pro-active and engaging with the social worker and abiding by the rules and engaging in the roster and doing their daily chores.
"It's been really positive, the people we have had stay are really appreciative."
Ms Angus said people had also been showing support for the shelter and dropping off food and clothing.
"The community has been amazing," she said.
"There has been lots of offers of support and we know we need a lot of support but we are still working through it all and working out exactly what we need."
She said the past few weeks had been incredibly busy for her, but she said she was enjoying the challenge.
"My feet have hardly touched the ground ... I am really enjoying it though."
Ms Angus said the shelter welcomed donations of food and clothing from members of the public and something they were short of was socks.
"We really need socks. If everyone dropped off just one pair, it would be a great help."
