Next week will mark the first day of spring and Tauranga is set to be warmer and wetter than average.
The Tauranga weather conditions are in line with the rest of the North Island, which is forecast to have warmer than average temperatures this September.
MetService meteorologist Georgina Griffiths said lower than usual pressures were expected in September.
"At the start of the month the low lies over the north of the country, keeping it on the damp and warm side from Taupo northwards, while the South Island keeps most of the dry weather and high pressure," she said.
"But as we move further into the month, expect those lows to shuffle south towards the Cook Strait, bringing rain for the remainder of the North Island," she said.
As a result of those lows, a wetter than normal September was forecast for these places, she said. However, above average temperatures could be expected north of Taupo.
Meanwhile the last days of winter will see heavy rain hitting the Bay.
An east to northeast flow is expected to strengthen over the North Island, as a band of rain slowly moves southward from late Friday through to Monday.
Ms Griffiths said there was a "moderate confidence" that rainfall accumulations would approach warning criteria over eastern Northland from Friday to Saturday, with a low risk about northeastern parts of Auckland from Saturday to Sunday, then about the Coromandel Peninsula, Western Bay of Plenty, Gisborne and the central Hawke's Bay hills and ranges from Sunday to Monday.
