A historic human skeleton discovered yesterday at Papamoa Beach TOP 10 Holiday Resort will be taken to Auckland University for analysis, before being returned to Nga Potiki for burial.
The skeleton uncovered while construction was taking place on their new Conference Centre and Guest Lounge.
A contractor uncovered the skull around midday, while working on the site of the multi-purpose building, which is due to open later in the year.
"Since the discovery we have been working closely with Papamoa iwi Nga Potiki and Heritage New Zealand," said Rebecca Crosby, General Manager of the resort.
"A karakia was said over the site and the workers yesterday, and excavation work will continue today. We would like to assure all of our guests that the Resort is still fully operational."
The remains will be taken to Auckland University for analysis, before being returned to Nga Potiki for burial.
"We have been told by police and local iwi that it is not uncommon to find historical remains in the Papamoa, Mount or Tauranga areas," she said.
